Information

Records maintained by churches can often provide information useful in genealogical research. The type and content of records kept by each denomination varies. Churches may have recorded baptisms, confirmations, marriages, deaths and burials as well as other records of membership. Membership records often include the admission and removal of church members. Although the content of church records can be unpredictable, they can sometimes provide valuable clues and should not be overlooked.

To make use church records, it is necessary to know the religious background of the family you are researching. Clues may be found in published histories or based on family traditions. You may be able to make an assumption based on the family's ethnic background. Once a likely denomination has been determined, you can begin to search for the necessary records. This is often the most difficult part of the process. In some cases, churches no longer exist so that records may have been transferred to other churches, placed in the centralized archive of the denomination, or turned over to historical groups. In other cases, the records may be readily available on microfilm or still exist in their original form at the church attended by the family. The information given below may help to begin your search.
