Information
The first comprehensive survey of Logan County cemeteries was conducted in the late 1930s by Dick Humphrey. His work, Data concerning cemeteries of Logan County , issued in 1939 is a listing of cemeteries within each township containing information on their location along with the number of potential grave sites. It appears that his efforts were directed toward surveying the terrain and determining the location of veteran burials perhaps as part of a WPA project.
Humphrey's list includes a number of cemeteries without the corresponding location information. Presumably, he was unable to actually locate and survey these cemeteries. His sources of information were not documented, but it has become apparent that some these lost cemeteries are the result of confusion between alternate or obsolete names of existing cemeteries versus their current names. As an example, Humphrey lists a Fisher Cemetery within Perry Township. Although its exact location is supposedly unknown, the Fisher Cemetery is usually plotted on maps on land formerly owned by the members of the Fisher family who settled in the area at an early date. Early generations of this family are buried in the North Greenfield Cemetery which bordered the Fisher family property on its southwest corner. No doubt, it was the North Greenfield Cemetery that was sometimes referred to as the Fisher Cemetery since it was on the corner of their property, and there would have been little need to establish a second Fisher family cemetery elsewhere on their land. Nevertheless, the Fisher Cemetery has been cited on lists and plotted on maps as if it existed as a separate cemetery which can no longer be found.
A second, common misinterpretation of Humphrey's data is the number of grave sites. The fact that his list cites the location of a typical cemetery as 30 feet from Township Road ... is an indication that he was a surveyor measuring that cemetery's boundary from the centerline of the adjoining road allowing for its right-of-way. No doubt, he surveyed the dimensions of each cemetery and calculated the number of potential rather than actual burials. There is no indication that he counted markers or looked for irregularities in the landscape as the indication of the number of actual burials. Nevertheless, figures from Humphrey's list are recorded as the actual number of persons in Ohio cemeteries, a directory of cemeteries in the state compiled by the Ohio Genealogical Society. I have noted a number of cases similar to the Hatcher Cemetery, a small family cemetery which never had more than 10 burials at most, but which is listed as having 87 persons buried there.
